Specialty Graphic Imaging Association
Executive Summary
June 2011

Profitability in a Changing Marketplace

Those of you with more than a few years invested in specialty imaging will remember when the ability to consistently make a quality print was enough to separate you from the competition and drive profitability. Print quality was a huge variable, and many companies were unable to deliver on a consistent basis.

Today, the game is different. Digital imaging has leveled the print-quality playing field for graphics producers. The widespread adoption of digital imaging technologies has minimized the print-quality variable. At the same time, adoption of digital imaging has heightened quality and consistency standards for screen printing and other imaging processes.

Raising the bar on accepted print quality has thinned the herd — forcing out companies that can meet the quality standard with traditional processes — but it also has led to commoditization and the need to find profits beyond the print.

Today's successful graphics producers are well-managed businesses, using the right technologies for specific operations. They are efficient in all phases of their operation and excel at minimizing waste. But in many cases this still isn't enough to achieve their target profitability. While there isn't a one-size-fits-all methodology to growing profitability, many of the leading graphics producers are expanding customer support before and after the print. Whether it's providing creative services, product fulfillment or other activities valued by the customer, many of today's most successful graphics producers are redefining their role in the marketplace.

The SGIA community is fortunate that the emergence of digital imaging technology coincided with customer interest in shorter run, customized solutions — especially in the retail sector. There's nothing wrong with being at the right place, at the right time, with the right solution. But we can't afford to rest on today's successes. Profitability will continue to be a moving target, and the better managed companies, equipped with the right technologies and the ability to adapt to a changing marketplace, will lead the way.

I encourage you to stay actively involved in the SGIA community and take advantage of the networking and educational events at SGIA 2011, including the educational zones on the Expo floor. Our goal is to help you maximize today's profitability and prepare for tomorrow's opportunities.

See you in New Orleans!
