On May 20th, the European Union adopted an amendment to the REACH chemicals law to ban the use of cadmium in both jewelry and plastics. This amendment comes into force on December 20, 2011. The use of cadmium is already subject to a number of restrictions, including paints and consumer goods.

On May 27th, the EU member states agreed to update the RoHS directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive 2002/95/EC) to apply to a wider range of products, including medical devices, electronic toys, cables and spare parts. EU countries are required to adopt the revised RoHS legislation into their national legal codes within 18 months. A full copy of the revised directive is available, and will be posted soon.
