Secure Top Management Commitment —
|

One of the most critical steps in the planning process is gaining top management's commitment to support SMS development and implementation. Management must understand the benefits of a SMS and what it will take to put one in place. To develop this understanding, explain the strengths and limitations of your current approach and how those limitations can affect the organization's financial and other performances. Management also has a role in ensuring that the goals for the SMS are clear and consistent with other organizational goals. Management's commitment should be communicated across the organization. |

Build An Implementation Team —
Establish your sustainability committee as a first step in putting a sustainability management system (SMS) in place

Hold Kick-Off Meeting —
Once the team has been selected, hold a kick-off meeting to discuss the organization's objectives in implementing a SMS, the initial steps that need to be taken and the roles of team members. If possible, get top management to describe its commitment to the SMS at this meeting. The kick-off meeting also is a good opportunity to provide some SMS training for team members. It is recommended that you follow-up this meeting with a communication to all employees. |

Investigate and Determine Your Environmental, Health and Safety Issues
A first step in the SMS-building process is understanding the legal and other requirements that apply to your operation. This step is important for understanding your compliance obligations. For example, you might have an operation that is covered by an air quality permit or might provide a service that results in the generation of regulated wastes. Your SMS should include processes to ensure that such legal requirements are addressed when you conduct these operations (or when they are modified).
While compliance is important, your SMS should be designed to help you accomplish more that just compliance with applicable laws and regulations, but these compliance requirements should be a major consideration. |
