Presenters will guide you through the science of water-based inks, requirements, recommended production parameters, best practices for art preparation, proper screen parameters and chemicals, the influence of the shirt fabric, and steps to integrate water-based inks into your production floor.
Attendees will see first-hand a variety of printing techniques through a series of on-press demonstrations and learn about essential press parameters required for success.

Tom Davenport is the Founder of Motion Textile. With over 20 years of experience, Davenport possesses in-depth knowledge of both the process and business of high-end and high-volume apparel decoration. He is also the co-founder of The Ink Kitchen, an industry community promotion real-world knowledge sharing (www.inkkitchen.com). Davenport serves as a board member for the SGIA, the premier trade association for the print industry.
Jesse Martinez has over 20 years of experience in screen printing, digital products, and supplies through distribution and manufacturing opportunities. He started his career in 1999 as a Technical Sales Representative for Murakami Screen USA and managed accounts in Latin America and Western US sales representative. In 2002, he became an Outside Sales Representative for Parmele Screen Process Supply in North Hollywood, CA. In 2005, Jesse moved to US Screen Print & Inkjet Technology where he worked with dealers worldwide with both screen printing supplies and digital printing equipment for garments. Since 2014, Jesse has worked for Matsui International, a PVC free water-based ink producer and advocate of environmentally friendly practices. He currently is their Screen Printing and DTG Sales Manager and strives to help businesses grow their market share in the screen printing and digital garment decorating industry through education and technical support. Throughout his career, he has served as a valuable resource for technical support and products in water-based ink solutions.
Beppe began his career in 1972 as a Graphic Designer and Screen Printer at Serigrafica Bergamasca. He later owned TIMS Serigrafia in Bergamo, Italy which was a screen-printing company specializing in production of stickers, plates, electronic circuits and garment decoration.
In 1977, TIMS merged with Serigrafica Bergamasca to facilitate the strengthening of their services and to grow the garment decoration segment. In 1980, Beppe founded Quaglia Pubblicità, a Company specializing in pre-press services (color separation, films and screens), inks, materials and tools for screen printing.
In 1988, Quaglia Pubblicità set up Elabora, a fully computerized Company segment to provide graphic skills and new printing solutions to the garment decoration industry. In 1993, Quaglia srl is established through the merger of Quaglia Pubblicità and Elabora. In the early 2000’s, Quaglia srl becomes the exclusive distributor in Italy for Wilflex plastisol inks, M&R printing equipment, Nazdar UV and Digital inks, and Stretch Devices retensionable Newman Roller Frames. In 2007, VIRUS® INKS was launched and the brand has become an internationally recognized leader in water-based inks.
Johnny Shell has served as the SGIA Vice President of Print Technology & Training for the past twenty years. In this role, he is responsible for developing community focused training and educational opportunities to keep the industry moving forward. Some of his activities include delivering seminars at industry events both domestically and internationally, and his articles appear regularly in industry publications. He has received numerous awards throughout his 30-year career and is a member of the Academy of Screen & Digital Printing Technology, an international body of experts which honors qualified individuals through election to membership for their distinguished, long-term contributions to, and application and promotion of, screen and digital printing and associated imaging technologies for graphic, textile, industrial and electronic printing applications.

9:15 AM to 10:15 AM - Types of Water-Based Inks (Matsui) - Understand the differences between water-based inks (discharge, HSA) and the printing techniques that are achievable. Get insight in the major requirements for integrating water-based inks into a production workflow.
10:15 AM to 10:45 AM - Break
10:45 AM to 11:45 AM - Print Production - This segment will dissect various multi-color prints (manual and automatic) including 4-Color Process, Simulated Process, and printing on light and dark garments. You’ll also learn about color mixing systems and matching color for light and dark garments.
11:45 AM to 12:15 PM - Screens for Water-Based Inks (SPSI) - Learn about the unique requirements of printing water-based inks, including recommended mesh counts, stencil systems, proper exposure, and press parameters to achieve optimum results.

1:45 PM to 2:45 PM - Special Effect Water-Based Inks (Virus) - Learn about water-based special effect inks, and the results you can achieve using a little creativity, and the capabilities of special effect inks.
2:45 PM to 3:30 PM - Selecting the Right Shirt (B+C) - There’s more to printing water-based ink than just the ink. Discover important factors to consider when printing with water-based ink. Get a review of popular styles and colors available from B+C.

4:00 PM to 4:45 PM - Putting it All Together (Sanmar) - By now, you’ve absorbed a lot of content, and that’s good. But, there’s more! This session will make the case for water-based inks and discuss the advantages of integrating them into your production floor. Get some key selling points when talking with customers.

Saturday, September 21, 20199:00 AM to 9:15 AM - Introduction to Day 2 WB/Camp - Day 2 will be a free-flowing agenda where you’re in charge. Visit with a variety of demo stations to help you with questions about screen making and see demonstrations on a variety of printing techniques (discharge, simulated process, special effects, etc.) on both manual and automatic presses. Take the opportunity to talk more about the business end of the spectrum and some of the soft goods that are available.
