Australia Issues Findings on Phthalates

Australia’s chemical regulator, NICNAS, has issued a report concluding that no regulatory controls are needed for two phthalates found in children’s toys. The phthalates in question, diissodecyl phthalate (DIDP) and di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP) were assessed under the Agency’s priority existing chemicals program. The May 5th report concluded that there is negligible risk of adverse health effects for children even when cumulative exposure to a range of phthalates is considered. Release of these findings means that DIDP and DnOP are no longer classified as priority existing chemicals.
