The Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Discusses the Future of Wearable Technology

On March 3rd, 2016 the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade, chaired by Rep. Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), met to discuss the future of wearable technology. With the rise of Fitbits, Apple Watches, and other wearable consumer tracking products, it is clear to see that such technology will have a significant impact on our lives in the near future. The subcommittee has sought to discuss potential problems and changes, positive or negative, which may arise in conjunction with the improvement of wearable technology. The impact that this kind of technology could have on the garment industry is significant. Meg Burich, Director of Commercial Development and Marketing for Adidas Digital Sports explained how Adidas has been able to incorporate tracking technology into their sportswear. Zebra Technologies has also created devices that seek to make the workplace more productive. The general consensus of the subcommittee was that Congress should proceed to advance policies which allow the United States to be a leader in wearable technology, but with caution. There are some concerns that must be considered, most notably with security and privacy issues. This technology will certainly play a large role for businesses and consumers in the near future, and Congress must work to bring security and other laws up to date to reflect the changes that will occur.
