Recall the last time you added a new member to your company team. Were his or her services so desperately needed that there was literally no time to properly introduce and integrate them into the company? For the past few years, many businesses have reduced employee headcount via layoffs and have not replaced workers who have retired or quit. Seemingly, gone by the wayside has been the need for new employee orientation and the concept of onboarding — a.k.a. organizational socialization — the link between the last stage of recruitment and the first step toward retention of the workforce. Employee turnover in any business is costly. In fact, statistics show that workers are most vulnerable to leave during the first six to 12 months of employment than any other time in their tenure with a company. Onboarding shouldn’t be reserved for only new employees. Businesses should offer their team members a booster shot of enthusiasm and vision for the mission and purpose of the company periodically and regularly. Vince DiCecco of Your Personal Business Trainer will share why now is the time to resurrect the lost art and practice of employee orientation and give your organization’s espirit de corps that needed shot in the arm.
