The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 — better known as Proposition 65 — requires the State of California to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer or birth defects, or that may lead to other reproductive harm. This list, which must be updated at least once a year, has grown to include approximately 800 chemicals since it was first published in 1987.
The Department of Toxic Substances Control's (DTSC) Safer Consumer Products regulations took effect on October 1, 2013, and will be phased in over the next several years to coordinate with the timing of the various regulatory requirements.
