Glossary

The PRINTING United Alliance Glossary serves as an excellent industry terminology resource. It is the language by which we all communicate. Without it, universal understanding would be impossible.

To keep our constituents well informed about changes to the increasingly complex industry terminology, PRINTING United Alliance has developed this glossary of terms. Definitions are for general reference only. Usage may vary between companies, individuals, or national and country customs. The information presented is as accurate as the authors and editors can ascertain and PRINTING United Alliance assumes no responsibility for the use of information presented herein.
  • Aperture percentage (mesh opening area) (percentage open area) (open area)
    The percentage of the total area of a web of screen printing mesh that is not occupied by the threads of the weave; i.e., that portion of the fabric area through which ink can pass.
  • A-stage
    An early stage in the reaction of a thermosetting resin where the material is still soluble in certain liquids and fusible, also reference B stage and C stage.
  • B stage
    An intermediate stage in the reaction of a thermosetting resin where the material softens when heated and swells in contact with certain liquids, but does not fuse or dissolve; also refer to A and C stage.
  • Breakdown voltage
    Electromotive force where the insulation between two conductors is destroyed.
  • C-stage
    The final stage in the reaction of thermosetting resin where the material is relatively insoluble and infusible; thermosetting resin in a fully cured state
  • Gold karatage
    A measure of purity or fineness of gold. (24 karat represents pure gold.)
  • Montage
    The process of cutting out parts and mounting prints or parts of prints on one support for the purpose of photographing or reproducing it.
  • Mutagen
    A chemical or physical effect that can alter genetic material in an organism and can result in physical or functional changes in all subsequent generations.
  • Porosity percentage
    The percentage of the total volume of a material occupied by both open and closed pores.
  • Stage connector
    A display part used in stage-like constructions.
  • Stagnation pressure
    The sum of the static and dynamic pressures of a fluid.
  • Tag
    A strip made of cardstock, paper, or plastic attached to an item to identify, classify, or label it.
  • Tag stock
    Thin flexible cardboard available in white and a range of colors.
